Overview

Brief

Prevent falls caused by dizziness through the aid of a wearable device

Approach

Cali was inspired by my grandpa and his multiple falls. After researching elderly falls, I found that BPPV was the most common cause. Through a literature review, our team found that there are exercises that help alleviate symptoms of BPPV but they are difficult to complete independently, accurately, and effectively.

Outcome

Cali enables people to accurately and effectively perform treatment that alleviates their debilitating symptoms of BPPV in the comfort of their own home.

Meet Abiza

I would like to introduce you to Abiza.

She works in an assembly line, moving products side to side, all day, everyday.

These movements result in a debilitating dizziness that prevents her from working, driving, and causes her to live in fear of falling.

Abiza has BPPV and she is not alone in this daily struggle.

Objective & Current Standard of Care

Our objective is to alleviate the debilitating symptoms of BPPV, which is the most common form of vertigo. There are 24.6 million people in the United States that suffer from BPPV and 497 million globally. The symptoms of BPPV are debilitating to the point that 86% of patients will suffer from the interruption of their daily activities, 68% will reduce their workload, 6% will quit their jobs, and 4% will change jobs.

In the current standard of care, the Epley maneuver is 83-90% effective at treating BPPV when performed by a physician during a clinical visit. However, the recurrence rate of BPPV is 13.5%-50%, which leads to a lack of patients' trust in the medical team and unnecessary evaluations. As a result, the home Epley maneuver is recommended by physicians for recurrent BPPV patients. Inconsequently, unguided home treatments are more prone to incorrect technique and are the most common cause of failures in at-home treatments.
